ILCNY: Coalition of NY Muslim Groups Announce NY Muslim Voter Project (NY MVP)

(NEW YORK, NY, 2/16/2021) – A coalition of New York Muslim organizations today announced the creation of the New York Muslim Voter Project (NY MVP), a non-partisan coalition dedicated to maximizing turnout among the state’s registered Muslim voters and registering new Muslim voters for the upcoming and future elections.    

The NY MVP coalition plans to educate and mobilize Muslim voters by registering as many Muslims as possible, educating Muslims about rank choice voting in NYC elections, providing general candidate and voter education, share informative webinars, resources, graphics, provide critical updates on the political process, and engage in comprehensive GOTV efforts. 

New York City is home to an estimated 800,000 Muslims, making up about 9 percent of the city’s total population. The city’s Muslim population accounts for some 22 percent of America’s Muslims. 

The NY MVP coalition is made up of the following 501(c)(3) organizations: 

Majlis Ash-Shura: Islamic Leadership Council of New York (ILCNY); Council on American-Islamic Relations, New York (CAIR-NY); Islamic Circle of North America, New York (ICNA NY); NY Muslims United for Civic Engagement (NY MUCE); Muslim Ummah of North America (MUNA); South East Queens Muslim Collective, Inc. (SEQMC); Muslim American Society, New York (MAS NY); and African Immigrants Commission of NY & CT.

Saleem Siddiqui, president ICNA- NY, CSJ (Council for Social Justice) stated:

ICNA has built relations between communities by devoting itself to education, outreach, social services, social justice, and relief efforts. We are Proud to be part of NY MVP coalition.”

Dr. Abdus-Salaam Musa of the SEQMC stated:
 

“The Southeast Queens Muslim Collective’s motto is ‘Fostering Dialogue, Collaboration and Encourages Civic Engagement.’ We are enthused to be part of the collaboration with the New York Muslim Voter Project. That will encourage Muslims across the city and state to register to vote and become active in the process of educating our community.”

It advocates ‎for the issues that directly impact the African immigrant community such as ‎immigration, health care, jobs, and housing. It is the voice for the African ‎immigrant community and the bridge between other communities and the ‎African immigrants’ communities of New York and Connecticut.‎
